Types of Window Coverings for New Jersey Window Treatments

New Jersey Window Treatments

Blinds:

Blinds are traditional window coverings and are extremely common in homes and businesses throughout the country. They are built with a headrail, individual and adjustable slats, and a bottom rail. They can be closed to block light and protect and privacy, and opened to let light in and create a view of the outdoors.

  • Blinds are among the most inexpensive window coverings. If you’re on a budget and looking to outfit your home with new window coverings, blinds may be your best option. Faux wood and aluminum mini blinds are priced to fit almost any New Jersey Window Fashions budget without sacrificing any quality or beauty.
  • Blinds can be easily repaired. Because blinds are built using several individual slats, they can be easily repaired if they get damaged. Broken slats can be glued or even replaced altogether with ease. In addition, both faux wood and aluminum blinds are also easily cleaned and maintained, making them less likely to become stained or faded over time than other types of New Jersey window treatments.

Shades:

Shades aren’t as common in homes as blinds, but they’re still a very popular and effective option for blocking light and protecting privacy. In addition, shades are rapidly changing and becoming more and more versatile. For example, our sheer shades use highly advanced fabrics and combine the function of blinds and traditional shades.

  • Shades create a built-in and low-profile look. When lowered, certain types of shades (especially roller shades and cellular shades) create a matte and low-profile look on windows. Their simplistic and uniform design makes them ideal for homeowners who prefer to keep their interior design focus elsewhere. However, roman shades and bamboo shades can easily be the centerpiece of a room for homeowners who want to draw eyes to their windows.
  • Shades are highly effective at blocking light and protecting privacy. While blinds are perfectly capable of reducing glare and helping your family feel safe and secure inside your home, shades can take those benefits to a new level. Shades can be paired with both blackout liners and privacy liners, which are designed to turn ordinary rooms into sanctuaries of peace and quiet. They’re also perfect for media rooms, home offices, and bedrooms, and home theaters.

Curtains:

Curtains are generally made from lightweight fabrics and are designed to add a decorative flair to windows. Unlike inside-mounted blinds and shades, curtains are installed completely outside of windows and may cover only a small part of your windows or a large portion of them. Their design often makes them a stronger focal point of rooms than blinds and shades. Many curtains are relatively short and may fall only to the bottom of the window sill, while others may be floor-length.

  • Curtains help protect your blinds and shades. If you already have blinds or shades and add curtains to the mix, you may find that your existing New Jersey window treatments will last longer and require less maintenance and cleaning, especially if you keep your curtains closed. In addition to keeping pets and their sharp claws and teeth at bay, curtains also act as dust magnets. While you’ll still need to dust them on a regular basis, curtains are easily removed and can simply be shaken off outside.
  • Curtains can complement and accent your blinds and shades. If you’re looking for curtains that purely decorative due to already having blinds or shades installed on your windows, you’ll be happy to know that curtains are an excellent way to further enhance the beauty of your window treatments. Curtains can create interesting contrasts to the colors, patterns, and textures in the wood, fabric, or synthetic materials used in your blinds and shades, and they can also add an extra infusion of color to your room.

New Jersey Window Treatments

Drapes:

Many people think curtains and drapes are interchangeable. However, they are two unique window covering types. Drapes are made almost exclusively with thick and heavy fabrics and typically are floor-length in size.

  • Drapes are great at insulating and soundproofing rooms. While thin, sheer curtains will provide virtually nothing in the way of insulation and soundproofing, thick thermal drapes are great for reducing heat loss during the winter and keeping cold drafts at bay. Thick drapes also create a dampening effect for loud and bothersome noises, making them ideal for homeowners who live near train tracks, industrial facilities, or busy highways.
  • Drapes can give a room a formal appearance. Curtains are generally considered informal and casual window coverings, while drapes are more formal in both appearance and function. Drapes are perfect for dining rooms, living rooms, and other areas where guests are frequently entertained. However, drapes don’t have to be installed only in formal rooms. When paired with high-quality blinds or shades, they’re perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any room in your home.

Window Fashions – Benefits of Using them in Your Home

Window Fashions – Benefits of Using them in Your Home 150 150 wjfigw4q3
Have you ever considered using window fashions in your home? Most people tend to overlook the benefits of quality window fashions and don’t realize how material and structure impact their home. Many believe they are used only for aesthetic reasons. Selecting the right window fashions can keep you in control of light, help conserve energy, and more.

Window Fashions in NJ & NYC

Benefits of Using Window Fashions

  • Privacy: Keep your private matters private with window fashions. Window fashions are available in several designs that vary the level of privacy given. Many people have become accustomed to purchasing them at a department store where they’re surrounded by poor quality products and little selection. On top of that, they settle for curtains that are highly opaque and sacrifice their natural light for privacy. This is not the only solution. Specialist companies, such as Metropolitan Window Fashions, offer many options that will let you have control of privacy and lighting.
  • Light Control: The material of your window fashions and their structure plays a huge role in how much light can enter a room. For maximum control consider horizontal or vertical blinds. These blinds make it easy to redirect light. However, if you’d like to maintain a view, bottom up/top down options might be the way to go.
  • Protection: UV rays can damage your floors, ruin artwork, and cause fading to furniture. Shades, blinds, and shutters can all keep your furnishings in pristine condition by blocking harmful UV light.
  • Energy Efficiency: Window fashions are good insulators. During the summer months closed blinds can keep heat from entering, and during the winter they can keep warmth contained. For maximum energy efficiency, consider cellular shades, dual shades, roman shades, shutters, or draperies.

Curtains or Drapes? | Somerset County Window Treatments

So what is the difference between a curtain and a drape? One difference is the type of fabric. Draperies, or drapes, are usually of a thicker, more elegant fabric, and are usually lined. Often, too, drapes are of a longer length, reaching to, or even puddling, on the floor. Curtains are less formal looking, are of a lighter fabric, and have more functionality, and a shorter length.

Change It Up | Somerset County Window Treatments

Let’s talk rooms. Just because one style of curtain or drape works well for a particular room, it does not necessarily mean it will work throughout the whole house. It’s tempting to go with one style of curtain for every room, but styles, functionality, color and design vary throughout your home. Take into account factors like privacy, size and style of windows. Is one room more formal? You may want floor length window treatments to add elegance. A bathroom window should not be treated the same way you would a formal living space. So with this in mind, let’s explore some options.

Drapes

Because drapes are more formal, come in richer, more luxurious fabrics, and can lend a dramatic element to a room, they’re not recommended for every room in the house. In a living space, especially one with a large picture window, drapes can add a stunning focal point. Choosing the fabric, color and length will depend on whether you want them to be an eye popping contrast to a more subtle décor, or if you want them to compliment a brighter wall color. Drapes can also be a good choice for a bedroom. Make your room a sanctuary, a place you can enjoy any time, not just somewhere to crash at night. Heavier drapes also means less light entering the room, ensuring a good night’s sleep. Adding drapes that touch the floor in a rich fabric, possibly on an elegant swish rail, can turn your bedroom into a dream of a room.

Curtains

Keep in mind with kitchens and bathrooms that you will want something that you can easily take down and wash. This is particularly true in the kitchen, where most windows are over the sink, and are susceptible to splashes of dirty or greasy dish water. A lot of people choose tiered window treatments, also known as café curtains, which allow a gap of sunlight into your kitchen. This also gives you visibility out, of course, so, as pretty as they are, the curtains are not all you can see. In rooms like hallways and family rooms, curtains are a good choice, if privacy and light blocking are not as big an issue. These are usually high traffic areas, and easier to maintain treatments are probably a good idea. So whatever room you are looking to finish, we can help you add just the right touch. With our wide selection of drapes and curtains in a variety of fabrics, lengths, colors and patterns, a Somerset County window treatments specialist can find just the right window dressings you are looking for.

Springtime Decorating: Embrace Your Style

Springtime Decorating: Embrace Your Style wjfigw4q3

What’s your favorite part of spring? Is it the gorgeous weather? The fresh air? How about the lovely reminder that the dreary days of winter are coming to an end? Spring feels like a new beginning–a chance to start again. If you’re like us, you love springtime decorating. Let this new season be a fresh start for your home. There are so many ways to rejuvenate your surroundings. That blank canvas will also bring a feeling of renewed energy to your life. And, the best part is, it’s simple! Take a look at some of our ideas for springtime decorating.

Springtime Window Treatments

#1 Start Neutral

Your springtime decorating may not usually consist of neutral colors. You probably go for bright hues or pastels. This season, one of the hottest colors is a cross between two of the design world’s favorite neutrals: Beige and Gray. It’s called “greige,” and it’s the perfect color for the start of a new season.  Add a touch of contemporary design while you’re springtime decorating. Have you seen Poised Taupe? Warm, inviting, and easy to match–you will fall in love with the simplicity of this color.

#2 Flower Power

springtime decorating florals

Spring brings in beautiful colors, which is great for springtime decorating. The flowers, especially, offer a certain beauty to our outdoors. Why not bring it inside? The soft pop of color offered by lilacs, tulips, and daffodils will revitalize your home. Create a centerpiece for your dining room table. Keep a small arrangement on your nightstand. Use silk flowers to craft a colorful wreath for your front door. When it comes to springtime decorating, it’s all about the refreshing hues. This year’s color of the year can bring the brilliant ‘pop’ of color you’re looking for. Take a look at how to use Greenery in your springtime decorating.

#3 Environment Control

springtime decorating dual shades

Take a look at your windows. Are they bare? If so, your priority for springtime decorating should be to take control of your environment. Windows are a source of light, but they also can bring in too much light–meaning, your furniture is at risk of damage from the UV rays, your rooms may be filled with an uncomfortable glare (or heat as summer approaches), and you have little to no privacy. Don’t suffer through these issues. Instead, find the right window treatments. You’ll gain control over your space’s ambiance and comfort while adding designer style.

#4 De-Clutter Your Rooms

springtime decorating pleated shades

Springtime decorating means spring cleaning! It may not sound like fun, but you will feel amazing afterwards. What rooms in your home do you use the most? Start there. Take a weekend to go through your belongings, and ask yourself, “Have I used this recently? Do I absolutely need this?” If the answer is no, it’s probably safe to get rid of! Minimalist design is the “in” thing right now, so while you’re cleaning out your space, you’ll also be adding immense style.

#5 Incorporate What You Love with Springtime Decorating

You aren’t going to truly love your springtime decorating until you start incorporating the designs that you love. There are always new trends that you may or may not be drawn to. You don’t always have to keep up with the latest designs. Instead, consider the looks that you keep going back to. What are your Pinterest boards full of? What pages do you have marked in your design magazine? Use these ideas in your springtime decorating! Are you ready to get started? We’re here to help you along the way. Contact our team at Metropolitan Window Fashions for designer advice and ideas.

Have you ever wanted to have a chat with an interior designer? Would you love to know what’s up and coming–what they really love when it comes to fashion, style and innovation? It’s a behind-the-scenes look. It’s the details we all wish we knew. You’re getting a sneak peek at the latest design trends and upcoming upgrades in window fashions.

What’s your favorite new fabric?

india silk window fashions“I love Duettes in India Silk. It is a beautiful, soft fabric with unique dimension and an almost a woven look that brings in complimentary coloring.  I love that it coordinates nicely with the other window shades, in the same fabrics, and you can achieve a total home solution for design and function.”

What colors can we expect to see this year?

gray window fashions“You’re going to see a lot of beautiful, soft colors, combined with textures that bring this exquisite feel to the space. Smoky blue, charcoal gray and a wide range of sophisticated neutrals make this an exciting year to design with fabrics.”

What’s your favorite new design element?

square top treatment window fashions“No question–what they’ve done to Designer Roller Shades and Screen Shades is awesome!  These are definitelty a favorite for my clients with a gorgeous collection of new fabrics and superior function.  I’m excited that we are finally able to reduce the light gap–these shades provide the smallest in the industry.  My favorite feature of these collections is the new top treatment.  It’s a square cassette that shows off a clean and contemporary look. And for those clients that prefer a reverse roll,  they’ve redesigned the brackets and covers with stylish finishes to coordinate the home.  I just love it when I can re-introduce roller shades to a new client, they’re always so impressed with the innovations and crisp modern look of them.”

What are you excited to show your clients?

handle cutouts window fashions“Hands down–I can’t wait to show my clients what Hunter Douglas has done with NewStyle shutters. These are already our most popular plantation shutters, but they’ve received some upgraded design elements that are simply fabulous. Urban Gray is the newest addition to the colors–gray adds such on-trend, sleek styling. The other statement-making design upgrade for NewStyle is the handle cutout, in a rectangular shape–it’s such a custom look.”

How is technology playing into Hunter Douglas products this year?

motorized shades and blinds window fashions“It’s huuuuge! Clients are really exploring the total automation of their home, and PowerView motorization is now compatible with other home integration systems–like Logitech’s Harmony and The Nest. It makes control of your home a seamless, effortless process. Automated shades transform the home, but now with one single device controlling all aspects–home security, window coverings, media–it goes way beyond what we ever thought was possible.”

Choosing Custom Window Treatments – Let’s Get Started!

Choosing Custom Window Treatments – Let’s Get Started! wjfigw4q3

Choosing custom draperies for your home is an exciting project and as any decorator will tell you, your window treatments really make a room. Often times, this is the last design element added to a room, but the one with the most impact. Custom draperies mean that a homeowner’s choices are limitless when it comes to styles, fabrics, colors and embellishments. This is where a professional decorator is needed, and we here at Metropolitan Window Fashions offer our design service with experienced decorating professionals than will make this process not only educational, but fun and enjoyable! If you are looking for custom draperies, here is some advice to help you understand the process and give you some insight on design options that you need to ponder when choosing custom draperies.

Tips for Custom Window Treatments

  • Style of a Room – This is probably one the first questions one of our design professionals will ask, what is your style? Traditional rooms, may require more ornate styles and fabrics as well as plenty of embellishments. Types of styles for your window treatments could also include top treatment options such as swags with trims. Traditional patterns and fabrics would also be considered including damasks, silks and jacquards. A more transitional or modern style would keep the styles of fabrics and styles simpler and cleaner, and less pattern . Linens and textures work well in spaces that have a minimalistic style.
  • Colors and Patterns – Color and pattern can be a challenge when choosing custom draperies, but this is where a professional can definitely help! A room tends to look more interesting when there are 3 patterns in a room. Usually, the largest patterns are on the larger pieces, which can include the rugs and a sofa. Your window treatments, if you are looking to include a pattern, maybe a medium sized pattern or even a smaller pattern that coordinates. When you are mixing patterns, it’s always best to stay in the same color scheme. Colors are fun to incorporate in a room, but choosing a particular color will have different effects. You can contrast your colors by choosing something that is dramatically different than your wall, or you can keep a monochromatic color scheme, but keeping within the tones of the wall, which makes for a softer transition.
  • Types of Fabrics – We discussed particular fabrics that would work well with traditional, transitional or modern rooms, but let’s delve a little further. Fabrics are made up of many different types of fiber that affects the way it drapes and durability. Cottons and Cotton blends are great for drapes, they are soft and provide a great “hand” . Silks can also drape well, but faux silks drape better and are more durable. Homeowner’s need to be aware that a silk cannot be steamed, and that wrinkles and slubs are the natural and part of the beauty of the fabrics. If a more pressed look is for you, we would recommend a faux silk which is a poly blend, it drapes beautifully, does not have a wrinkle and is more durable than silk. Linens do not drape well and cannot be steamed. They are a stiffer fabric and will wrinkle easily. Think of a linen jacket. However, there are faux linens, that are a blend of linen and cotton, or polyesters that drape beautifully and give you that linen look. These faux linens come in a variety of colors and styles, including embroidered styles. Our decorators are using more of these types of fabrics and they are definitely on trend.

The Best Window Treatment Options for Limited Space

The Best Window Treatment Options for Limited Space wjfigw4q3

You need light and privacy solutions. You know that much. But, as you look around your home, the layout of your windows may confuse you. Does it seem like there’s limited space? It’s more common of a problem than you’d think. Whether you’re dealing with strict window boundaries, obstructions, or windows that are too close together, spatial issues can put a real snag in your decorating plans and in the comfort of your home. Is it possible to add window treatments when the window frame is so close to the wall? And what do you do about large sliding glass doors and adjacent windows? Well, we have some answers that might help. Check out these FAQs about the best window treatment options, and discover our solutions for dealing with the most common strict boundaries.

Window Treatment Options

What do I do when there’s no room outside the window frame?

shutters best window treatment optionsThe short answer: go inside. In fact, we actually prefer to mount window coverings inside the window if possible. It usually provides the cleanest look and most optimal function. When considering the best window treatment options, it’s important to realize that different types of window treatments require different mounting depths. Using the measurements of your windows, our team can help you find and customize a product that will fit perfectly, and they’ll create a mounting plan to ensure you have minimal light gaps and a gorgeous, finished look.

Will an inside or outside mount work best?

Honestly, it depends, and we can help you decide. Much of the answer rests on the spacing around your window and the style you’re going for. Recently, there’s been a surge in exterior finishing effects for outside mounts. So, while the hardware might be able to fit for a solid mount inside, you may choose an outside mount simply because you’ll have more options for finishing the look at the window. Our design team has tools to help you visualize the best window treatment options for your home. You can count on them to guide you through your mounting choices as you figure out how to achieve the ideal look and function for your home.

How do I handle my sliding glass door and adjacent windows?

adjacent windows best window treatment optionsThe key is to match, complement, and coordinate. Hunter Douglas makes that easy. Their products are available in an array of fabrics, textures, and patterns that look beautiful together. Not only that, but a number of their window coverings orient vertically as well as horizontally. This means you can have the function you need along with coordinated design. So, rest assured! You don’t have to sacrifice style if you have limited space between windows. Our professionals can show you the best window treatment options in your unique home for both fashion and function.

What do I do about door handles and window cranks?

The beauty of our products is that they’re custom, and Hunter Douglas understands that obstructions often go hand-in-hand with window and doors. That’s why they make cut-out window treatments. Whether you need bottom, side, center, or headrail cut-outs, we’re sure to have a product that’ll work for you. Designed and sized just for your windows and doors, custom cut-out window coverings provide clearance for door handles, window cranks, architectural elements, and even window air conditioning units. Just because you have obstructions doesn’t mean you have to have bare windows. Talk to one of our consultants today about the best window treatment options to customize what’s standing in the way of getting the light and privacy control you deserve.

Ideas for Custom Window Treatments

The Right Light and View

custom window treatments NYC

Believe it or not, it’s possible to enjoy natural light and natural views. With your current window shades, you might find yourself covering up both and turning on inside lights or constantly squinting. Glare is a frustratingly real problem–especially if you have floor-to-ceiling windows. It can be impossible to see the beauty that lives just outside your windows and even the screens of your favorite devices inside your home. Get rid of glare and frustration with custom window treatments. Fit just for your home and style, top-down, bottom-up window coverings give you the flexibility to open a section at the top or bottom and leave the rest of your window covered, or combine the two and cover only a part in the middle. Open them all the way, or close them tight. The positioning possibilities are endless–which makes them perfect for your specific lighting needs. It’s easy to soften or block direct or glaring rays while still letting in natural ambient light–and the landscape–when you want. Upgrade your life with mood-boosting daylighting, easy-to-see screens, and beautiful outdoor views made possible by top-down, bottom-up custom window treatments.

The Right Temperature

custom window treatments NYC
Natural light also influences the temperature inside your home. With cool temperatures fast approaching, you’ll be glad to know that sunlight is a valuable resource for heating your home. Yet, you might have found this summer that 80° and sunny outside can easily mean 110° and scorching inside. So, how do you reap the benefits of sunlight in the winter while tempering its harmful effects in the summer? With custom window treatments, of course! When the summer sun’s out, you can position top-down, bottom-up shades to keep sizzling rays at bay. Then, in the winter, you can let those warming beams in. Plus, cell-within-cell technology creates pockets of air to provide insulation at the window. This blocks the waves of heat and cold that seem to flow through your window panes, which helps to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout your home. Top-down, bottom-up custom window treatments will provide sweet relief for you, your air conditioner, your furnace, and your wallet.

The Right Amount of Privacy

custom window treatments NYC
Your windows are elegant features in your home. Large expanses of glass can be a stunning centerpiece in any room, but do they leave you feeling a little exposed? Having privacy in your home is important, and, while you might love the view out of your windows, there are times you want to limit the view in. Top-down, bottom-up custom window treatments let you create the perfect amount of privacy for every room and every occasion. So, whether you’re enjoying the skyline or beautiful landscaping around your home–at a dinner party or snuggling up on the couch in your PJs–you can count on feeling comfortable. With custom window treatments, you can relish in the rewards of privacy control!

The Right Time

Now’s the time to enjoy the versatility and control that custom window treatments can offer you. And it’s the best time of the year with our Season of Style event. Top-down, bottom-up window coverings are the ultimate custom option. Tailored to fit the various shapes and sizes of your windows and with colors and textures that complement your decor, they’ll turn your home into the stylish, beautifully lit, energy-efficient, and private haven you’ve always wanted. Why window fashions are eco-friendly

Why window fashions are eco-friendly wjfigw4q3

Yesterday marked the 44th annual Earth Day, a celebration to honor the environment. However, we at Metropolitan Window Fashions believe it’s great to follow eco-friendly practices 365 days a year. Not only can going green help improve the environment, it can also save you money.

If you’re wondering how to become eco-friendly in your home, look no further than window coverings. Although these features are aesthetically pleasing and can help your home’s interior come together, they can also block out sunlight during the summer and keep your house warmer in the winter. Take a look at some of the top “green” window treatments below.

Top Eco-Friendly Window Treatments

  • Blinds: “Reflective blinds can reduce heat gain by about 45 percent,” reports a blogger for homesessive. “They’re great for their ability to block and reflect direct sunlight onto a light-colored ceiling, which diffuse the light without much heat. Plus, interior blinds allow you to adjust slats to control light and ventilation.”
  • Draperies: In order to get the most out of drapes, it’s best to hang them as close to your window as possible. Believe it or not, the color of the drapes also plays an important role in its effectiveness. Medium colored drapes can reduce heat gain by 33 percent according to the news source.
  • Window films: Another window covering option to consider in the summer is window films. East and west-facing windows are likely to receive the biggest benefit from these fixtures.

The right window fashions can cut heating costs

The right window fashions can cut heating costs wjfigw4q3

You already know that custom curtains and drapes can add to the aesthetic of your New York home, but did you also know these coverings can save you money by cutting your heating costs? Keep warm all winter long with the right window fashions. Recently, LivingGreenMag.com spelled out the best window coverings to use during the winter months. Take a look at the selections below:

Types of Custom Curtains

  • Blinds: Blinds are very practical in many rooms of your house, ranging from the kitchen to the bathroom. These features allow you to let light in at your liking and close up with ease when you need privacy.
  • Drapes: Aside from being a gorgeous addition to your living room, draperies can also help retain heat in the winter. To fully maximize the power of your drapes, try using two drapery panels instead of one and be sure to close your window coverings after the sun sets so heat doesn’t escape.
  • Film: “High-reflectivity films on your windows cut the glare of the sun and allow rays to bounce off the window,” Emily Green, freelance writer for the new source says. “Reflective film is a more permanent solution than blinds, shade and draperies, because you cannot remove film to allow more light to enter.”
