How to make a statement with flowers

Who doesn't love flowers?  They're colorful, they can cheer you up when you're blue and they symbolize springtime. Even though it's still chilly throughout Manhattan, we can still bring a little brightness to our homes with chic flower displays. Floral arrangements can look especially charming when situated next to a windowsill. Take a look at these tips to make a statement with flowers:

  • Contrasting colors: "Remember the color wheel? You know: primary, secondary, tertiary colors? Well complementary colors are those colors that are opposites on the color wheel, but that complement each other," writes Jen Wallace, contributor for lifestyle and design website Ecosalon. "Combinations like blue and yellow, red and green and purple and green can make striking arrangements […] "
  • Matching motifs: Corresponding roses or tulips to your window fashions is oh-so chic! Choose a color similar to your draperies. For instance, enhance your lilac window coverings by situating actual lilacs near them. Or, add an added touch of elegance to your dining room windows with an array of red roses.
  • Vibrant vases: Sure a classic vase can hold flowers, but why not get trendy? Today, homeowners are using household objects to show off their floral arrangements. Everything from Mason Jars to old Coca Cola bottles can be transformed into a DIY vase. Try tying a ribbon around these objects for a pop of pizzazz.
