How to get rid of clutter this summer

Even though we are well into summer, you may still be behind on your spring cleaning. Now that the weather is finally warm, it's a great time to sort out all of your belongings and possibly host a yard sale. Even if you don't consider yourself an organized person, there are some tips you can adhere to in order to get rid of clutter in your New York home. Take a look at some helpful tricks below, which will leave your house looking spotless:

  • Divide and conquer: Cleaning your entire house shouldn't be a one-person job. After all, your husband and kids live there too! If you need an extra hand or two, don't be afraid to ask for help. Divide household cleaning into certain tasks. For instance, your kids can go through their toy box and determine if any of the items should be donated to charity. It's important to teach benevolence (and organizing skills) at a young age, since these values will stick with them throughout adulthood.
  • Figure out what you need to get rid of: "Odds are it will come down to a few broad categories. In our house it's mainly items for Goodwill, children's outgrown clothing to go to consignment, books to trade for credit at our local bookstore, things to be returned to the store (for whatever reason!), library books and dead batteries," writes Houzz.com contributor Alison Hodgson.
  • Host a yard sale: As we've mentioned before, now that the weather is warmer it's the perfect time to host a yard sale in your neighborhood. Not only will it give you the opportunity to purge items that you simply don't need any more, it' will also give you the opportunity to mingle with your neighbors. As the saying goes, one person's trash is another person's treasure.
  • Invest in storage containers: If you have items that you don't want to toss, a good idea is to place them in storage containers. These containers can be stylish and fit in with your corresponding design scheme. Whether you choose decorative boxes, under-the-bed storage, or extra shelves, the important thing to remember is to only store the items that you are going to use again.
