Follow these rules for a stylish home

They say that having good style is innate, but certain interior design rules can actually be taught. If you're having trouble adhering to your design goals this year, you may need a lesson from an expert interior designer. Recently, Sophie Robinson of British TV show "The Great Interior Designer Challenge" took time to share her tips with Mirror.co. Take a look at some of the helpful hints to give your New York home a stylish makeover.

  • Accent wall: Who says walls have to be white and boring? Take your room from drab to fab by painting one wall a vibrant shade. This look is right on trend!
  • Window fashions complete the look: "A window is to a view what a frame is to a painting," writes Robinson. "Therefore don't overlook the way you are going to dress them. Dusty Venetian blinds and too-short-curtains are not the way to go. I love combining curtains and blinds in coordinating fabrics for the ultimate well dressed look. Go for long curtains for a more elegant look."
  • Use your personal flair: Your home is your own space, so feel free to exude your one-of-a-kind personality. Sometimes if you follow all of the trends your living room may look more like a catalog than an actually livable area. Decorate with your favorite colors and bring original trinkets and family heirlooms to the mix.
