Decorating tips for the Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is almost here! This holiday is all about fun, friends, fireworks and festivities! Even though tropical storm Arthur is supposed to make its way up the east coast this Friday, you shouldn't let the rain spoil your party. Whether the storm holds off enough for you and your family to celebrate outdoors, or you have to bring the festivities inside, we have you covered with some creative decorating ideas.

  • Decorate mason jars: Mason jars are trendy and practical, since they can hold anything from candles to silverware. Simply pick up a few mason jars at your local craft store and then decorate them in patriotic colors. Paint them red or blue and then draw on white stars. If you have kids, they'll love helping you create this DIY craft.
  • Embellish with beads: Red, blue and silver beads can be used to jazz up everything from your table to your front porch. Drape these beads over your picket fence and offer them to your guests to wear throughout your party. You can even try wrapping beading around candle holders for a trendy look.
  • Offer patriotic refreshments: Chances are your guests will be very thirsty. In addition to having alcoholic beverages, make sure you have enough drinks for those under 21. We love the idea of putting berry-flavored juice or tea in metal tubs to keep them cool. Not only will this help your guests beat the heat, but it can also be used as a decorating opportunity if the liquids are red or blue.
  • Provide treats: Even if this weekend is a wash-out, your guests will enjoy tasty some treats. Although the hurricane may prevent you from toasting marshmallows outside, you can still treat your friends and family to some delicious s'more brownies made in the oven.
  • Set your table: "Add layers to your Fourth of July tablescape by mixing patterns in patriotic colors," writes a blogger for HGTV. "To keep the different prints from looking too busy, be sure to introduce one large-, one medium- and one small-scale print through linens and serve ware." Once the table is set, then you can serve your favorite Fourth of July foods, including barbecue ribs, hot dogs, and of course red, white and blue fruit.
