Did you recently purchase your first home or condo? If so, it's time to banish the immaturity of your youth and move on to a successful future. The first step is to give your design scheme a makeover. Kiss these three juvenile decorating items goodbye in favor of more mature decor:
- Bare windows: Your home won't be complete until you invest in quality window fashions, including custom curtains and drapes, shades or blinds. You may have gotten away with hanging a strip of fabric on your window in college, but this is not the case anymore.
- Build-your-own furniture: "Often I see people waiting to move into the 'forever home' before they begin to decorate, and until then, simply buy whatever is on sale to fill up the space," designer Scot Wood tells Elle Decor. "But, by the age of 30, you should really be living intentionally—invest in some classic pieces that you can carry with you, but stop waiting."
- Futon: When you were in college, it was perfectly acceptable for you to have a futon. This was even okay when you were in your twenties and had guests stay over your small apartment. Now that you're a true adult, no one should have to sleep on uncomfortable furniture. Your futon isn't doing any favors to your home design scheme – and it's definitely not helping out your back! Instead, invest in a quality mattress and a sturdy couch.
