Do you need new window treatments? 5 signs it’s time to change wjfigw4q3

After using the same drapes for years, you might grow increasingly attached to them and come to think of them as an irreplaceable part of your home. While some furnishings can certainly last for a long time, you should ask yourself regularly whether or not it's time to try new custom window treatments instead. If nothing else, going "out with the old" can bring new life to your home by shaking up your previous arrangement.

Consider the following four possible signs when thinking about purchasing new drapes. Depending on the current state of the drapes you do use, it might be better to replace them now than you think:

  • Bad physical condition: Needless to say, if the coverings have been worn out through too much use, it's a good idea to find some fresh ones to take their place. This could apply to both the fading of the print or tears and other harm in the fabric itself.
  • Stylistic clashing: Maybe at one time your prize curtains blended into the background well, but after a new paint job they stand out badly. Rooms can change as you try out different approaches to style and color: if you've made a radical redesign, the coverings you use will likely need to change with them. Every time you make a major alteration to a room, it's worth it to reimagine the windows along with everything else.
  • They don't fit your new windows: Not everything needs to come with you when you move house. In a New York Times Home & Garden column, Tim McKeough says that homeowners can very well bring their coverings along to a new residence, as long as they are compatible with the window frames in that home. Do some measuring beforehand to find out if this is the case, and go ahead and leave the old coverings behind if you won't be able to use them.
  • You never bought them in the first place: Some window treatments come with the home, which means that the resident could be more inclined to simply accept them whether or not they fit the space. What worked for a previous occupant won't necessarily fit your styles and tastes, and it's possible the original owner didn't take special care of them, either.
  • Your house is colder than it used to be: Have things cooled down in your neighborhood? Are your windows leaking more heat than they used to? The coverings could be part of the problem. Instead of lightweight options that let warm air out, try a heavy drape that will cover the whole window effectively. Josh Elledge of SavingsAngel also recommends using window plastic to make them even more secure.
