Bay Window Decorating Idea

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Through the use of luxurious fabrics and delightful details, a challenging shaped bay window can be transformed into a  relaxing and inviting space by any member of the Metropolitan Window Fashions decorating team . Every home should have a comfortable  place to sit and enjoy a cup of tea, read a good novel or just enjoy a lovely view and this bay window area  could be just the spot. The view of the lake is not hindered in any way by the choice of window treatment.  In place of heavy draperies or room darkening shades a neutral color scheme has been used to enhance the view.

Wonderfully full drapery panels puddle on the floor and are held in place by large tassel tiebacks. Soft roman shades in a contrasting neutral color make it possible to control the amount of light that is let into the room.  A padded cornice board with subtle bead trim tops it all off.

In order to accent the architectural curvature of the bay window, cushions have been created that follow the shape of the window.  The bolster pillows break up the expanse of seat cushions and add a bit of soft color to the space. Placing tassels at the ends of the pillows adds a whimsical and lighthearted touch.  In place of a solid wood frame, a mesh covering has been used on the front of the window seat. This visually “lightens” the look and has the added advantage of creating additional storage space.

Through the use of luxurious fabrics, soft colors and comfortable furnishings, an inviting space has been created that will make you want to curl up and take an afternoon nap just like the kitty is doing on the window seat.  For more information and ideas, visit windowfashions.com or call 908-755-4700 (in NJ) or 212-501-8282 in New York City for a free Shop at Home Design Consultation with one of our talented decorators.

Treatments For Challenging Shaped Windows

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Ever walk into a room that has great, but challenging-shaped windows, and wonder how you are possibly going to add any window treatment?

  1. Making a Shorter Window look Taller
    • When wall space above the window is possible, install the curtain rod at least 6 inches above the top of the window frame. If using a valance or pelmet, this is another very effective alternative as you create the illusion that the window continues behind the pelmet or valance and it does not block any of the light or view.
  2. Making a Narrow Window look Wider
    • Install the curtain rod beyond the width of the window making sure to begin just at the edge of the frame while not covering any part of the window. When curtains are opened they will not obstruct any light while simultaneously make the windows appear wider.

One Window – Three Styles!

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Traditional Style:  Crowned with a structured upholstered cornice, French-pleated panels in a fresh color brighten windows with updated traditional flavor.  Traditional doesn’t have to mean stuffy, as these pretty panels prove. The fresh robin’s egg–blue fabric and sculptured cornice set an updated classic mood. A woven moiré pattern gives the cotton fabric a touch of formality, while inset white ribbon trim adds contemporary polish. Breaking an inch at the floor for a graceful drape, the operable French pleated panels are paired with an underlayer of white pleated sheers. The upholstered cornice with self-piping provides a classic finishing touch.

Transitional Style: Transitional-style window treatments happily marry traditional elements with contemporary ones—and can work in settings of either style. These cotton floral panels exude the homespun charm of a Cotswold cottage, but take on a dressier air with elegant goblet pleats and cotton tassel fringe. A whitewashed rod adorned with acorn finials adds an extra dash of style. Hung above the window frame and just skimming the floor, the curtains bring a note of relaxed sophistication to the room.

Contemporary Style:

Contemporary Style curtains are headed with crisp triple waterfall pleats, these streamlined gray silk panels introduce an air of urban chic. Wide bands of contrasting silver silk add visual interest to the leading edges, and echo the brushed nickel rings and matching rod polished off with low-key end caps. Hung ¼ inch above the floor for easy maintenance, the draperies are layered over soft Roman shades in a sheer cotton voile. Both panels and shades adjust for multiple levels of light and privacy.

Decorating A Bay or Bow Window

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Bay windows can create an intriguing focal point in your home, accenting your kitchen or living room space with depth and dimension. Their distinctive architectural design is an ideal opportunity for imaginative and creative decorating. So flex your creative muscles and discover the full charm potential of your bay window.
Curtains, blinds or drapes should accent your bay, drawing it in to the rest of the room through color, texture and pattern. At Metropolitan Window Fashions, our experts know all the most current styles, fabrics and hardware to create a beautiful look in the room – adapted to a bay or bow window.

For curtains and drapes, special bowed rods are designed for bay windows. Long panel curtains can elegantly enhance your bay – but just be sure not to block the natural light of your window. Café-style curtains are another smart option, as they can provide privacy, while still allowing light to stream through.

Shutters, shades and roll-up valances are also terrific options for bay windows, as they can keep your corner cozy and private, while being a quick draw away from opening up the space and light to full effect. Clean-lined and simple, they help avoid clutter in the space.   Visit www.windowfashions.com and contact one of our decorators for a free-no obligation appointment to help you create a beautiful look for your bay or bow windows.

Top Ten Home Decorating Trends!

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

1.Open Bed/Bath Suites

Intimate and enchanting: Open bed/bath suites appeal to our private selves. With fewer walls inside your house, now more than ever you’ll want window fashions that provide optimal privacy and lighting control.

2.Through the Looking Glass

The trend of larger windows in today’s new homes is becoming more popular because homeowners are looking to illuminate their homes with natural light. Thanks to improved insulation, consumers can enjoy this eco-friendly option as well as energy efficiency. When it comes to versatile window treatments for larger windows, consider our new Vignette® Traversed™ with Vertiglide™ Modern Roman Shades. This elegant treatment offers a vertical solution for expansive windows and doors while providing a perfect balance of sunlight and energy efficiency.

3.Sheer Fabrics

Just as sheer scarves are making a comeback in women’s wear, so are soft, translucent fabrics for home interiors. The trend is migrating from Asia, where sheer textiles have long been favored by fashion and interior designers. Luxurious and sensual, sheer materials elevate the style of any room. At Hunter Douglas, you’ll find hundreds of sheer fabrics across our product lines.

4. Beach Is the New Chic

Beach is the newest casual style. It suits a casual lifestyle and features design elements such as bare floors with area rugs and mismatched furniture with slipcovers and incorporates a color palette of soft neutrals of white, yellow and sand. The windows showcase a range of styles and materials, from shutters and Natural Elements™ blinds to Vignette Modern Roman Shades, Country Woods® Genuine Wood blinds and Designer Roller Shades. The best part? You don’t have to live at the beach to enjoy this look!

5. Cornices

Looking for the perfect crowning touch to your window treatment? Striking yet subtle, cornices of all styles transform an ordinary room into an elegant and memorable setting. Coined from the Italian word cornice (which means “ledge”), the horizontal molding provides an extra accent of style as well as structural focus to virtually any room. This design element will draw your eye upward, adding expansive height and space to your living area. At Hunter Douglas, you’ll discover a wide selection of beautiful cornices and first-rate stains.

6.Automated Systems for your home

Gadgets that we previously saw only in a James Bond movie are now a part of our daily lives. Lighting, heating and cooling, security systems, even kitchen appliances — and, yes, window fashions — can be automated and controlled remotely. With Hunter Douglas Platinum Technology, you can raise or lower window fashions like honeycomb shades using a wireless remote control.

7.Eco Designs

Making the green grade means different things to different people. At Hunter Douglas, one of our green standards is energy conservation. In 1985, we invented the highly energy-efficient Duette honeycomb shades in response to the energy crisis of the late 1970s. More recently, we’ve introduced the Duette Architella Collection, which offer superior energy efficiency thanks to their patented honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb construction.

8. Sleep Better

I used to suffer from lack of sleep until I properly covered my windows with room-darkening fabrics. To determine if a fabric from Hunter Douglas will block out light, look at the sample swatch’s opacity rating – the higher, the better. Or, hold a sample swatch up to a shade-less lamp with a high wattage. For a close-up view of fabric selections, visit The Hunter Douglas iMagine™ Design Center or visit your local Hunter Douglas dealer.

9.Upload Your Own Photo

Not long ago, visualizing how a new style might look on you—or in your home—took a professional eye. Today, a growing number of online tools provide that valuable perspective by allowing you to upload your own photo. To see how Hunter Douglas products will look in your home, visit the iMagine™ Design Center and upload your own photo. Finding just the right product, fabric and color has never been easier.

10.A Return to Warm Tones

The design world is moving away from cooler, neutral colors and embracing warmer, terracotta tones. The overall palette is still soft, but there’s a bit of spice, too. Look for mid-tone colors with purples, orange and red hues to gain design prominence. For example, these Duette Vertiglide® honeycomb shades feature soft rust hues that lend wonderful warmth and charm to this bedroom.
