Do you love a bright bolt of color at the window that contrasts with your wall paint? Or are you a ‘monochromatic’ type that feels more comfortable with a ‘softer, gentler’ look in the room? Some rooms really call for more pattern and color at the windows, while other rooms look best when the treatments are toned down. It really depends on what you love – but here are just a few great ideas to ‘dress up’ or ‘dress down’ your windows!

To Contrast or Not to Contrast – That’s the Question?
January 30th, 2012Bay Window Decorating Idea
January 25th, 2012Through the use of luxurious fabrics and delightful details, a challenging shaped bay window can be transformed into a relaxing and inviting space by any member of the Metropolitan Window Fashions decorating team . Every home should have a comfortable place to sit and enjoy a cup of tea, read a good novel or just enjoy a lovely view and this bay window area could be just the spot. The view of the lake is not hindered in any way by the choice of window treatment. In place of heavy draperies or room darkening shades a neutral color scheme has been used to enhance the view.
Wonderfully full drapery panels puddle on the floor and are held in place by large tassel tiebacks. Soft roman shades in a contrasting neutral color make it possible to control the amount of light that is let into the room. A padded cornice board with subtle bead trim tops it all off.
In order to accent the architectural curvature of the bay window, cushions have been created that follow the shape of the window. The bolster pillows break up the expanse of seat cushions and add a bit of soft color to the space. Placing tassels at the ends of the pillows adds a whimsical and lighthearted touch. In place of a solid wood frame, a mesh covering has been used on the front of the window seat. This visually “lightens” the look and has the added advantage of creating additional storage space.
Through the use of luxurious fabrics, soft colors and comfortable furnishings, an inviting space has been created that will make you want to curl up and take an afternoon nap just like the kitty is doing on the window seat. Treatments For Challenging Shaped Windows
January 17th, 2012Ever walk into a room that has great, but challenging-shaped windows,
and wonder how you are possibly going to add any window treatment?
- Making a Shorter Window look Taller
- When wall space above the window is possible, install the curtain rod at least 6 inches above the top of the window frame. If using a valance or pelmet, this is another very effective alternative as you create the illusion that the window continues behind the pelmet or valance and it does not block any of the light or view.
- Making a Narrow Window look Wider
- Install the curtain rod beyond the width of the window making sure to begin just at the edge of the frame while not covering any part of the window. When curtains are opened they will not obstruct any light while simultaneously make the windows appear wider.

One Window – Three Styles!
December 27th, 2011Traditional Style: Crowned with a structured upholstered cornice, French-pleated panels in a fresh color brighten windows with updated traditional flavor. Traditional doesn’t have to mean stuffy, as these pretty panels prove. The fresh robin’s egg–blue fabric and sculptured cornice set an updated classic mood. A woven moiré pattern gives the cotton fabric a touch of formality, while inset white ribbon trim adds contemporary polish. Breaking an inch at the floor for a graceful drape, the operable French pleated panels are paired with an underlayer of white pleated sheers. The upholstered cornice with self-piping provides a classic finishing touch.
Transitional Style: Transitional-style window treatments happily marry traditional elements with contemporary ones—and can work in settings of either style. These cotton floral panels exude the homespun charm of a Cotswold cottage, but take on a dressier air with elegant goblet pleats and cotton tassel fringe. A whitewashed rod adorned with acorn finials adds an extra dash of style. Hung above the window frame and just skimming the floor, the curtains bring a note of relaxed sophistication to the room.
Contemporary Style:
Contemporary Style curtains are headed with crisp triple waterfall pleats, these streamlined gray silk panels introduce an air of urban chic. Wide bands of contrasting silver silk add visual interest to the leading edges, and echo the brushed nickel rings and matching rod polished off with low-key end caps. Hung ¼ inch above the floor for easy maintenance, the draperies are layered over soft Roman shades in a sheer cotton voile. Both panels and shades adjust for multiple levels of light and privacy.
